Abstract

The Sounding a Queer Rebellion network website contains a new freely accessible database [3] of LGBTI musical activity, songs, productions, protests and projects that others can search and access. Designed as a strategy to start a community, this database now offers the LGBTI community to see themselves represented in musical activity and has led to new opportunities in work and employment and has lessened the sense of marginalisation amongst those participating and those accessing the site. Further, the database offers the use of music to counter violence and discrimination.

Observing the database content (compositions, audio-visual creations, protest music and sound interventions in political demonstrations) serves to represent, make visible and build communities and identities that fight for their rights and enables dissident voices to find themselves and each other and draw strength from unity to confront the violence of society. This output is important as a repository of novel works, it represents a novel site for dissemination of LGBTI musical works and thus, connects individuals that otherwise wouldn’t be connected.
