Power, care and risk: personal reflections on pregnancy and childbirth

Emmerich, F

Authors

Abstract

The paper theorises through a power/gender framework the author's personal experiences of an externally labelled 'difficult pregnancy' and the procedural consequences for childbirth. The author argues that the language and technologies of risk produce highly regulated choices for women in their experience of pregnancy and childbirth. A contributing factor are the two distinct, and from personal experience rival, approaches to the care of pregnant women, midwifery-led care and obstetrics. Women are caught between the two schools of thought. The author argues for an integrated approach.
