Detecting Long Period Variables in M 33 Using UKIRT-WFCAM Images (2015)
Conference Proceeding
Saberi, M., Javadi, A., van Loon, J. T., & Khosroshahi, H. (2015). Detecting Long Period Variables in M 33 Using UKIRT-WFCAM Images. In Vol. 497 – Why Galaxies Care about AGB Stars III: A Closer Look in Space and Time (497)

We have used the UK InfraRed Telescope (UKIRT) to conduct a near-IR monitoring campaign to search for variable stars in the Local Group spiral galaxy M 33. Most of the 4643 detected variables appear to be Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars.

DUST in Nearby Galaxies with Spitzer (DUSTINGS): An Infrared Census of Extreme AGB Stars in Nearby Dwarf Galaxies (2015)
Conference Proceeding
Boyer, M. L., McQuinn, K. . B. . W., Barmby, P., Bonanos, A. . Z., Gehrz, R. . D., Gordon, K. . D., …Zijlstra, A. . A. (2015). DUST in Nearby Galaxies with Spitzer (DUSTINGS): An Infrared Census of Extreme AGB Stars in Nearby Dwarf Galaxies. In 497, Why Galaxies Care about AGB Stars III: A Closer Look in Space and Time

Nearby resolved dwarf galaxies provide excellent opportunities for studying the dust-producing late stages of stellar evolution. DUSTiNGS (DUST in Nearby Galaxies with Spitzer) is a 3.6- and 4.5-μm imaging survey of 50 dwarf galaxies within 1.5 Mpc.... Young Stellar Objects in the Magellanic Clouds: Herschel Spectroscopy First Results (2015)
Conference Proceeding
Oliveira, J. M., van Loon, J. T., & Sewiło, M. (2015). Young Stellar Objects in the Magellanic Clouds: Herschel Spectroscopy First Results. . https://doi.org/10.1017/s1743921316008231

We present preliminary results from spectroscopy obtained with PACS and SPIRE onboard the Herschel Space Observatory of a sample of massive Young Stellar Objects in the Magellanic Clouds. We analyse key gas-phase cooling species (OI], [CII], H2O, CO,... Read More about Young Stellar Objects in the Magellanic Clouds: Herschel Spectroscopy First Results.

Young stars and their circumstellar disks in the Sigma Orionis cluster (2004)
Conference Proceeding
M. Oliveira, J., D. Jeffries, R., Th. van Loon, J., & J. Kenyon, M. (2004). Young stars and their circumstellar disks in the Sigma Orionis cluster. In Open Issues in Local Star Formation (55–62). https://doi.org/10.1007/1-4020-2600-5_6

The sigma Orionis cluster is a young association evolving under the disruptive influence of its massive O-star namesake. We are analysing this cluster as part of a program to characterise the influence of O-stars on the early stages of stellar evolut... The curious case of Betelgeuse
Conference Proceeding
van Loon, J. T. (2023). The curious case of Betelgeuse. In The Sixteenth Marcel Grossmann Meeting On Recent Developments in Theoretical and Experimental General Relativity, Astrophysics, and Relativistic Field Theories (In 4 Volumes). https://doi.org/10.1142/9789811269776_0289

Betelgeuse is the nearest red supergiant, one of the brightest stars in our sky, and statistically speaking it would be expected to be “typical”. Yet it exhibits many features that seem “curious”, to say the least. For instance it has a high proper m... Read More about The curious case of Betelgeuse.
