Surface Pressure: Parenting and Caring Responsibilities and Academia - in person event
Sep 20, 2023

Description This event has emerged from my growing frustrations with academia as an early career researcher and a parent: and I am not alone in walking this tightrope. Teaching is a central function within British Universities, however the number of publications you have, and research grants that you win are often valued more. Research (and publications) require time, the headspace, the money, and the institutional support to succeed. Grant deadlines often fall within school holiday periods, with expectations that peer review feedback or revisions for grant applications and publications can be turned around in a severely restrictive timeframe. Moreover, the structures of labour and reward within the academy are structured along gendered lines, with the impact of Covid19 entrenching them further.[1] These issues compound inequalities within academia and disproportionately impact upon those with parenting and caring responsibilities.

This event seeks to bring together a series of speakers who will share their own perspectives and experiences. The hope is to not only share our stories or research, but to start an important conversation about good and bad practice within academia for those with parenting and caring responsibilities. With a view to produce a policy brief with the potential to impact upon current practices within academia.
