Abstract

Rome, Biblioteca Casanatense MS 2010 is an intriguing witness to canonistic activity in eleventh-and early twelfth-century Rome and its environs. The manuscript itself-or more properly the two manuscripts that were combined (as I will argue) sometime probably in the early twelfth century-combines a range of contemporary and older canonical sources and can be linked to any number of contemporary legal collections compiled in and around Rome and in southern (and northern) Italy in the later eleventh and early twelfth centuries. In this article, I look first to discuss the contents of Casanatense 2010 to provide a more detailed description than is currently available and also to correct some misconceptions and errors in the scholarly literature. Second, I will consider the manuscript's provenance which has been variously described as Rome, the vicinity of Rome or Farfa even if the latter is the most contentious. Here, and more interestingly, I will outline Casanatense 2010's connections with other earlier and contemporary canonical collections and manuscripts, some of which has been overlooked in the historiography. Finally, although it is difficult to make broader speculations on the basis of a single manuscript (notwithstanding its undeniable connection to other manuscripts), I will conclude by addressing the issue of whether and indeed how we might characterize this composite manuscript as a 'monastic' collection and what that characterization might actually mean.
