The Role of Technology in Transforming Global Value Chains

Abstract

Technology is now a value-chain-altering force for Global Value Chains (GVCs), transforming production, logistics, and trade patterns. This chapter reviews technology as a facilitator of GVCs, its economic effects, architectural models, design principles, and diffusion of innovations. It brings out the way digital technologies such as artificial intelligence, blockchain, Internet of Things, and automation increase efficiency, transparency, and integration across global supply networks. In addition, this chapter investigates the sustainability factors of technology-oriented GVCs, evaluating their environmental, social, and governance concerns. Notwithstanding these developments, technology uptake in GVCs is fraught with challenges, ranging from regulatory challenges, cybersecurity threats, and digital divides. The chapter addresses such challenges and potential risk-reducing strategies. It concludes by suggesting policy measures to build resilient, inclusive, and technology-led global value networks. The findings provided aid in comprehending the nexus between technology and GVCs and provide guidelines for policymakers, companies, and researchers to guide them through the changing landscape.
