Histories of everyday life: the making of popular social history in Britain, 1918-1979

Abstract
This splendidly written and meticulously researched book is an attempt to trace the rise and fall of popular social history in Britain, the most important manifestation of which was the ‘history (or histories) of everyday life’. Whilst such approaches to history have maintained their popularity – and today might be stretched to include living history museums and re-enactments – there has thus far been scant attempt to trace their origins or development, which therefore makes this study a key contribution to our understanding of twentieth-century society.
