Abstract

The introduction presents an overview of the history of arts education in English schools from 1890 to 1950. It explains and justifies the choice of exploring this further through the biographies of nine pioneers from the areas of music, drama and the visual arts. It introduces the underpinning themes of the book, namely progressive education and its connection with the arts; the ideologies implicit in creating and selecting an arts curriculum; and modes of influence on policy and practice in schools. It concludes with a summary of the remaining chapters.
