Abstract

Anisian Muschelkalk ramp cycles are well documented from the northwestern Tethys shelf and its northern Peri-Tethys Basin by detailed studies in Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, and Hungary. High-resolution correlation based on cyclostratigraphy has been attempted in recent years, but is still hampered by precise age control. The recent approach of Tethys–Peri-Tethys correlation of the eccentricity-cycle-scaled Anisian carbonate series integrating global climate signatures improves the so far established small-scale cycle correlation using high-frequency eustatic signatures in the Milankovitch frequency band. Cyclostratigraphic calibration of Lower Muschelkalk ramp deposits of different palaeogeographic settings by astronomical cycle-tuning of gamma-ray, isotopic and magnetostratigraphic data and integration of global climate signatures is the next step towards refined correlation.
