Abstract

It is important to recognize that the publication of this study is the outcome of a pioneering approach developed by the editorial team of what has recently become one of the world’s most highly ranked policing journals. As part of their underpinning strategy, the editors have chosen to publish invited original research articles on important issues relevant to policing, in terms of policy, practice, and theory. What is unusual about this method is that the senior editors provide initial scrutiny, but rather than inviting anonymous review and subsequent revision they instead asked those with relevant expertise to evaluate and then provide a commentary that is published alongside. We note that in the main these commentaries are very positive about our study but also raise some powerful criticisms. As a result, we have been offered the occasion to reply. We would like to thank those reviewers for their thoughts and perspectives but also to take this opportunity to defend our study by clarifying the misunderstandings that appear to underpin the otherwise constructive criticisms that are extended.
