Abstract

After more than 15 years of state securitisation, hostile media coverage and rising levels of Islamophobia, many Muslims in the UK express a widespread sense of being held ‘under siege – spied on, interrogated, routinely asked to “put their house in order” as if they were not, and had never been, an equal part of British society’. Creating a ‘culture’ is generally regarded as the collective shaping of ideas, values, traditions, artistic practices and products which are ongoing processes that encompass the cumulative efforts and achievements of people who share an identity based upon a combination of religion, language, history and geography. Muslim artistic cultures are syncretic, drawing upon a variety of influences that are both religious and secular, historical and contemporary. The UK has a distinctive scheme of equality, representation and multiculturalism and this framework, along with these sociological changes, has afforded Muslims greater presence in public institutions and protection by laws and policies.
