Economic aspects of the Sustainability Transition in Europe

Abstract

The EU has been an advocate of more sustainable practices for a long time, and many consider it a world leader. It becomes then justified to look into how the EU has been doing over time and what its plans are for the future in this key issue. The questions that emerge from an economic point of view are: where does the money that Member States send to the EU go? How is the EU budget spent? How much is it going to cost to move towards more sustainable practices? Who is going to pay for it? What are the trade-offs involved? The book will provide possible responses to those questions conducting an extensive review of the EU policies and programmes (Part I), the instruments associated to those policies (Part II) and the latest developments (Part III). Policies, instruments, actors, institutions, are all part of the EU governance system, a system that has been changing overtime but, as it will be seen very early on, requires further transformation.
