Abstract

Book abstract: Karl Heinrich Ulrichs, lawyer, sexologist, poet and breeder of silkworms, was an exceptional person of the 19th century. At a time when the church considered "sodomy" a sin and the state considered "unnatural fornication" a crime, he managed to free himself from all these prejudices and to see emotional and physical love between people of the same sex as a completely natural process. Only in historical perspective does Ulrichs' true greatness become apparent - especially in comparison to the more famous doctor Magnus Hirschfeld, who took a big step back after Ulrich's death by calling for understanding of homosexuality as a "mistake of nature". The appreciation of Karl Heinrich Ulrichs' life and work was the central concern of Wolfram Setz, the editor of the Rosa Winkel library, who died in 2023. Consequently, the Ulrichs memorial volume "Invictus" is also appearing in the historical book series. In his article, the sociologist and legal scholar Rüdiger Lautmann pays tribute to Ulrich's often overlooked achievements as a sexologist. Axel Schock reports on the resistance to naming streets and squares in Germany after Ulrichs, and the Berlin author Kevin Junk describes how he, as a gay man in his mid-thirties today, perceives the predecessor in the fight for homosexual emancipation. Other articles examine Ulrichs from the perspective of queer theory and reconstruct the personality patterns of homosexual men in the mid-19th century.
