Murderscapes, deathscapes, and workscapes in Québec's Eastern Townships fiction and ‘immersive literary geographies'

Morgan, Ceri

Abstract

Part of a larger project on fictional ‘heartlands’ (Arts and Humanities Research Council Leadership Fellowship, 2020–3), this two-part chapter considers examples of contemporary fiction and creative nonfiction of and on Québec’s Eastern Townships, along with participatory geohumanities. Looking at select thrillers by Louise Penny, Johanne Seymour and Denis Coupal, and creative nonfiction by Louise Dupré, it argues that these texts can be considered examples of regional/rural deindustrialisation literature. Reflecting on participatory research-practice in the field involving trials of the project audio walk, this chapter considers how reading, writing, and creative conviviality might come together to shape experiences and understandings of bodies in/and places.
