Abstract
Meta-analyses of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) of exercise interventions in people with knee and hip osteoarthritis (OA) provide strong evidence of, on average, a small-to-medium effect on pain and function outcomes compared to comparison interventions/controls. However, not everyone responds to exercise and sub-groups may exist who respond differently. Baseline variables within trials that alter the effect of an intervention are known as moderators. Aims: 1) to identify potential moderators of the effect of exercise explored or tested in RCTs of exercise for knee and hip OA; 2) summarise the evidence reported for these moderators.
