Abstract

The pandemic has exposed the need for new sources of funding in higher education. In many developing countries, the re-appropriation of funds due to the pandemic suggests that there will be fewer financial resources available for governments to support higher education institutions. This scarcity of funds provides a key reason that higher education institutions capitalise on endowments as a more viable source of funding after the pandemic. This chapter contextualises endowments in developing countries in the time of Covid-19 and provides practical recommendations for key stakeholders. It also presents a theoretical framework for stakeholders engaged in managing the processes involved in endowment. We identify four stakeholders: the endowment provider, the endowed university, the endowment team and the endowment enablers. We highlight the managerial implications for university managers who are exploring endowments as an additional source of income.
