Introducing game-based learning into teaching law to Foundation Year students has revolutionised the classroom. Not only has it allowed students to interact with each other and filled the classroom with laughter, it has allowed students to pick up transferable skills – whether they can see it at the time or not. Often, and frustratingly though, I have found students in the past asking how the task they have been asked to complete, relates to their assessment.
In this presentation I will discuss how I used reflection to assess Foundation Year students, building in the interconnection between the games played in the classroom and the transferable skills gained which are applicable to the wider legal sector. The discussion will start by outlining the purpose of changing the form of assessment to a reflection piece as opposed to a presentation, as was the case in previous years. I will highlight what worked well with this form of assessment, and what did not. I will draw on the experiences of students in the post module feedback to highlight why reflection is a suitable form of assessment for legal educational game-based learning.
