Effects of the new 2020 strategy on regional energy initiatives and energy markets integration

Abstract

Last years have seen how the environment around energy issues has changed a lot through the European Union (EU). Even though it has been always claimed that there is a need for better integration, the measures taken did not seem to be leading Europe through the desired path. Goals such as sustainable development, emissions reduction or energy security of supply have been on the EU agenda for years, and the continuous modification of directives, for instance in the gas and electricity sectors, is a clear indicator of the unsuccessful outcome so far.
