Abstract

In a usual morning surgery, a 2-year-old child presents with a 2-week history of reduced oral intake. He has recently completed a 1-week course of antibiotics for tonsillitis, prescribed by a GP colleague. While the child is systemically well, you notice a striking enlargement of the right palatine tonsil. Concerned about the possibility of quinsy and impending airway obstruction, you decide to refer the child to the emergency department for further assessment and management by the Ear, Nose, and Throat (ENT) team.
